CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

BUILDING A NEW VICE

Chuck Warner stood with a predatory glint in his eyes as he addressed the small assembly of his most trusted men in the dimly lit backroom of the trading post. The air hung thick with ambition and greed, magnified by his commanding presence.

“I want you to comb the town,” Chuck instructed, his voice smooth like oil over steel. “Find the women who are desperate, the ones on the brink—those are the ones who need our protection.”

The men, hardened by their allegiance to Chuck, nodded, understanding the unsavory undertones of the task at hand. They were well-versed in the art of manipulation and coercion, and the thought of preying on vulnerable women only seemed to embolden them further.

As Chuck’s enforcers dispersed into the wounded heart of the town, they prowled the streets and alleys with a hunter’s focus. Their practiced eyes quickly identified several women whose poverty and strife painted them as perfect candidates for Chuck’s offer of a safe haven.

The women, lured by the promise of steady work and security, found themselves being escorted back to the trading post. Eager faces lifted as they were introduced to Chuck, their new benefactor who pledged to care for them in exchange for their labor.

One of the group, Sarah, with her wary eyes and guarded stance, remained aloof. Something in Chuck’s manner set off alarm bells in her head. She watched as the other women’s faces lit up with hope, but she felt an icy trepidation gripping her heart.

That evening, Chuck and his men ensured their new ‘recruits’ were well-fed, encouraging them to enjoy the rare comfort of a hearty meal. The warm glow of the dining area saw the women relax for the first time in what felt like forever, with Sarah eyeing each joyous face skeptically.

Later, as the women were guided to the bathing area to wash away their past hardships, Chuck’s true intentions began to seep through the facade. Behind a concealed viewing slot, Chuck and his inner circle silently appraised each woman, assigning them grades like prized livestock.

“Good start,” Chuck murmured to his watchful compatriots, a twist of satisfaction in his gut. “But we’re mostly sitting on ‘C’s with one ‘B’ in there.”

They all nodded in agreement, dismissing the benevolence of this ‘clean start’ as merely a pretense for objectification. “We’ll round up some more tomorrow,” one of his men promised.

Chuck leaned back against the wall, thoughts churning. “There’s an ‘A’ out at Cooper’s place,” he said, the words dripping with hunger. “A woman with fire in her veins. Make sure you bring her back, whatever it takes.”

His men, eager to please their ruthless leader, assured him they would not fail. The seed of Chuck Warner’s latest scheme was planted, and it would be nourished by exploitation and deceit.

Dawn broke with a chill in the air as three of Chuck’s men approached the Cooper farm, their gait steady and determined, the subtle gleam of malice on their rugged faces. Each man bore a weapon that spoke of the business they intended to conduct—a business Chuck Warner himself had decreed.
